Background:

The Western Forage Testing System (WFTEST) was developed in 1994 to coordinate the testing for registration and performance of forage experimental lines across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is the final step before experimental lines are submitted by seed companies for registration in Western Canada.

The goals of this system are:

To streamline and coordinate the registration and performance evaluation process. The tests generally provide sufficient data for both the registration and performance information for the various agro-climatic zones in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

To share the responsibility of testing in the development of new forage varieties between the seed trade, the prairie provinces and the federal government.

Objective:
This research was started in 2001. This project will continue to provide Manitoba farmer’s with reliable adaptation and performance indicators under Manitoba conditions for new forage cultivars being developed and marketed.

Forage crops can be established in a number of production systems over a wide range of soil and climatic zones. But, proper selection of crop and variety is critical in optimizing the benefits of forage crops in a sustainable cropping system. The Manitoba Forage Crop Variety Testing Program provides Manitoba farmers with objective information of growth and yield characteristics of new forage cultivars as they enter the marketplace. The information assists producers in identifying varieties most suited to their farms. This allows for rapid update by producers of the latest genetic improvements available, which ensures that Manitoba farmers are competitive in both domestic and export markets. This program will increase the amount of information available for farmers to use in their decision-making process.

Project Description:
The Manitoba Forage Variety Program Test
1. Maintaining trials at the three major testing sites – Arborg, St.Pierre, Neepawa/Rosebank. The following data is collected:
- Herbage yield on 33 varieties of alfalfa, 2 varieties of cicer milkvetch, 4 varieties of brome grass, 5 varieties of orchardgrass, 5 varieties of tall fescue, 13 varieties of timothy. In addition, annual plots of 4 varieties of annual ryegrass are to be seeded and harvested for herbage. In total, production data will be collected for 66 forage varieties established on 264 plots harvested twice per season. Plots are harvested with a specialized forage plot harvester. Legume tests are harvested at 10% bloom and grass crops at full heading. Samples are weighed in the field and sub-sampled to determine moisture content. Plot maintenance includes pest control, weeding and border sanitation.
- Measure alfalfa winter hardiness tolerance on existing plots at three sites: Arborg, Tuelon, and Rosebank of 30 alfalfa varieties. Three overwintering periods are required to create sufficient separation between varieties. This will be the first year of data for half the plots and the second year for the remainder.

Grass Fed Beef Model

There are opportunities for Manitoba forage/livestock producers to grow and finish beef animals on a “forage only” diet to a niche market in Manitoba. There is also a potential for future export of this product which has additional health benefits.

The production technology information has recently been produced for Manitoba farmers and the potential market opportunities have also been explored. At this time, a Value Chain system is being developed and a producer Grass Fed Beef Association of producers formed. However, even if the opportunities may be there, if the producer finds it difficult to determine the profitability to the farm and family, then adoption of the technology and markets may be slow.

This past year an Excel spreadsheet has been developed consisting of up to ten worksheets which are connected to a summary page:

Grassfed Beef Model

These include:
1: Forage seeding: a) for perennial pasture b) perennial stored forage c) annual forage for finishing and for extended grazing
2: Pasture facilities including: fencing supplies, water and handling facilities
3: Cow herd: includes production expenses for the calf from birth to weaning
4: Feeder/stocker animal: weaning to the final finishing period
5: Grass fed marketing process: processing, product development and marketing
6: Summary: to include cost of gain, cost of salable product, potential market value and return to family and land base

These worksheets allow for individual costs to be included, however there are ten individual worksheets that need to be reviewed and completed by the producer. Results from each one are appropriately linked to other relevant worksheets and to the summary sheet.

The project will have a software specialist take this information and develop a very user friendly program that is relatively easy to use but will allow for individual adaptation.

Project Objective:
To develop a user friendly software program from the existing Excel based grass fed beef program.
Project Result: An interactive model has been developed to help one determine the costs and return for the production of grass fed beef within their operation. Data specific to the land base and cattle herd is inputted and will determine a net return per head. This model has been developed with 2008 statistics.
2008/2009 Provincial Grazing Club Events

Provincial Grazing Clubs Report
By: Rodger Sheldon, MAFRI Pasture & Grassland FPE (Ste. Rose)

There are 31 Grazing Clubs in Manitoba. Some clubs are very active with monthly meetings, some clubs have amalgamated, a few clubs are no longer active and some clubs host only 1 or 2 events per year. There are also 17 Holistic Management Groups, some of which are meeting regularly similar to provincial Grazing clubs. Michael Thiele and Wayne Lenfesty are contracted by Ducks Unlimited to act as Grazing Club Coordinators in the South Parkland and Southwest areas of Manitoba in conjunction with MAFRI and PFRA staff. This area is focusing on farming practices that support the duck population. Some clubs are working with local Conservation Districts as well as MAFRI and PFRA staff to organize and hold field days and workshops. Funding for all events was provided thru the federal Greencover Program coordinated by PFRA and MFC . MAFRI ( in cooperation with DU, PFRA, MFC and local CD’s) has taken a lead role to organize and hold the following events that occurred in 2008/2009. Grazing Club Coordinators

A project funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Greencover Canada program was carried out over the period of May 2007 to March 2008.

The objectives were to seed six, 40 acre sites (on producers’ land) across the black soil zone in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to perennial native plant blend, providing field scale demonstrations of how cultivated land converted to perennial cover using native plants (grass and forbs) could be successfully integrated into a producer’s land base. Once established, these fields (post-establishment) will be utilized by producers and may be hayed or grazed. Five sites were sucessfully seeded in the black soil zone across Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Some of the uncertainties of these stands will be the agronomic performance relative to tame stands, stand competitiveness to weed pressure, stand longevity and their other uses such as stockpiled feed. Many of these questions will be answered in subsequent years.

Project partners include Ducks Unlimited Canada, Greencover Canada, Manitoba Forage Council and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

Minnedosa Tour

July 12, 2007

18 ranchers toured the Manitoba Zero Till Association Research Farm (12 miles north of Brandon) where they viewed the alfalfa grazing / Alfasure project . The deep-rooted alfalfa varieties fit best in a 2- to 3-year crop rotation because they tap deeper nutrient resources and provide greater productivity. The Alfasure controls bloat very well as long as the cattle don’t have access to other water sources. Unfortunately, this required that the sloughs be fenced out resulting in little herd impact on the wetland vegetation . As a result the cattail is starting to choke out the sloughs.

The Ducks Unlimited trial pasture (640 acres at the N.E. corner of the Zero Till Farm) consists of both tame paddocks (mainly crested wheatgrass and alfalfa) and native ecovars, planted several years ago. The big bluestem, switchgrass and other natives had diminished over the years, so it was inter-seeded with a rough mix of legumes three years ago. This year, it is nicely filled with Cicer milkvetch (mainly), alfalfa, sainfoin and a little birdsfoot trefoil.

Gerald Bos guided us through his pasture, an area he recently converted from a grain to forages. He used a meadow brome / smooth brome / orchard grass / timothy / alfalfa mix, and divided the quarter sections into paddocks of about 20 acres. Forage production is tremendous in all paddocks. Gerald keeps perfect track of all grazing events and retains plenty of cover in grazed paddocks, moving the cattle daily. He demonstrated how the 600 cattle (cow-calf and yearlings) move to new paddocks with very little trouble, using a plastic post (insulated) to lift the electrified wire and allow access under it. His piped watering sites consist of 12-foot tires embedded in soil, blocked with concrete and back-filled with gravel.

Welcome to the North West Manitoba Grazing Club Page

Interested in new ideas? Interested in learning from the best? Grazing Clubs offer the opportunity to tour enterprises using holistic management techniques, intensive grazing management, extended grazing, new watering and fencing strategies… the list goes on. Clubs also bring in expert speakers who provide insight into forage production, calving, agronomy, saline soils, plant genetics, etc. The bottom line is the Clubs provide a free opportunity for you to learn from experienced graziers and to share your experiences with others.

The clubs in northwestern Manitoba hold meetings throughout the year, sometimes in conjunction with neighbouring Grazing Clubs or Holistic Management Clubs. The number of participants range from 15 – 20 per meeting.

Check out our Upcoming Events page to see if there’s a tour or event you’re interested in attending.

If you would like to learn more or join a Club, please refer to the following table to locate a Club near you.

Pasture Field Days

June 20 – 22, 2007

A round of similar meetings were held in three locations to increase efficiency in terms of speaker utilization, staff resources and associated costs. Dinner and refreshments were provided by our sponsors; Carl Driedger of Kelln Solar and Brent Benson of Agassiz Feeds. Attendance ranged from 20 to 30 graziers who found the presentations to be of value. The meetings were held at Westlake Grazing Club at Neil Olafson’s farm near the Narrows, the Lake Winnipegosis Grazing Club at Winnipegosis, and the Grand Plains Grazing Club at Gilbert Plains.

Dick Diven, a Nutritionist Consultant from Tucson, Arizona was the key note speaker. He spoke about reducing costs to improve profitability. He focussed on conception and tying breeding seasons with nature and the calendar. These ideas challenge the “norm” and gave producers a “think outside the box” perspective.

Don, Flaten, University of Manitoba, talked about winter feeding and manure management as it relates to regulations and the health and productivity of the land. He engaged the audience by using local examples to facilitate discussion.

Jason Kosowin, PFRA, Saskatoon, spoke about assessing current grazing management techniques and how it may be affecting production and the health of the range. Very knowledgeable re: native plant identification. There were excellent discussions with the graziers.

Carl Driedger, Kelln Solar, Virden, showed an example of a system they sell and gave an overview of options for off site watering and how it relates to grazing management, herd health and productivity. He also spoke about the assistance programs available to fund projects.

Brent Benson, Agassiz Feeds, Dauphin, discussed the mineral needs of breeding cattle during different times of the year (gestation, calving etc), and how deficiencies can affect conception and herd health. He suggested sampling your feed to assess deficiencies and recommended mineral and salt supplementation programs.

See pictures below.

University of Manitoba – La Broquerie Site

Dr. Don Flaten provided a site overview and description of the combined effort required to conduct integrated research investigating the relationships between microorganisms, soil nutrient, plant and animal productivity. Dr. Kim Ominski provided an overview of the forage and animal productivity, and how greenhouse gas emissions were measured over the previous three years of research conducted at the site. Dr. Mario Tenuta gave a brief lecture on soil dynamics, nutrient loading, utilization, carbon sequestration and green house gas net effect. Dr. Denis Krause shared his wealth of microbiological knowledge in regards to the possibilities for cross contamination of modified organisms

from hog manure to grazing animals, contributions to microbial antibiotic resistance and impacts upon ground water sources.

Brush Management – An Aerial Perspective

Ken Kennedy (DOW Agro) and Reg Friesen (Prairie Sky Aviation) showcased an area that had been cleared mechanically and followed up with an aerial application of chemical to control suckering and regrowth. Reg provided some practical tips for producers to consider when contemplating using aerial spraying as a tool for brush management.

Trevor provided an overview of their operation, focusing on minimizing the labor requirement for their 500 cows, and their experience with oats and millet for swath grazing.

During the evening, tour participants were offered the opportunity to take a guided tour of Manitoba Hydro’s Seven Sister’s Generating Station.

In addition, solar powered watering stations were set up at PR Farms where participants could view several different watering systems up close in operation, and several different farm built tools for making fencing easier.

The morning of July 26th, found everyone on the road again, heading for Ile des Chenes and Nyhoff’s Dairy. Albert, John and Henry exposed the group to a generational transfer in process, as evidenced by Albert’s deference to his sons in answering questions about the day to day activities which occur on the 400 cow dairy utilizing perennial ryegrass and alfalfa grass pasture for a substantial component of the summer feeding regime.

The next stop occurred at the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Tall Grass Prairie Preserve where participants were encouraged to learn traits specific to vegetation present in the Tall grass prairie ecosystem.

The final stop of the tour was Evergreen Land & Cattle Co. where Robert Krentz told the story of his journey from farmer to cow calf producer to management intensive grazing grasser operation.

Past Events

North Dakota Tour of Bismarck Area Ranches

June 24-26, 2007

Attended by Central & South West Grazing Clubs

32 ranchers and 3 Ducks Unlimited personnel were on the tour; five from the Saskatchewan Grazing Club and half from the North West and South Central Manitoba Clubs; (3 from Greener Pastures, 2 from Argyle, 1 from Boissevain, 1 from Minnedosa, 4 from Grand Valley and the rest from South Central Manitoba Clubs).

Ranchers Gabe Brown and Ken Miller, and USDA agronomist Jay Shurer gave a seminar describing their holistic management experience and the methods they use to attain their objectives of increased organic soil content, increased rate of water infiltration and reduced costs of production. In both ranchers’ cases, this has been achieved by growing forage and cover crops in the grain and silage rotation, using a variety of legumes, and by rotational grazing.

Gabe Brown explained that since he converted to these systems, his yields have increased while the inputs of artificial fertilizer and herbicides have decreased 75% and 50%, meanwhile his grain and beef production has increased by almost double. He uses many rotations and prospers from all. For instance, Gabe will plant triticale and hairy vetch together, silage the triticale, then graze the remainder in late summer and again next year. Alternatively, he may plant a cover crop into the vetch aftermath in July or August, then graze it in late fall and the following year. The cover crop is described as a “cocktail mix” of various plants capable of penetrating the soil hard pan, loosening the soil and building organic content. These include radish, turnip, sweet clover, alfalfa, vetches, and peas, often including oats and barley. His favourite sequence of crops in new land is: alfalfa, corn and hairy vetch, peas, hairy vetch with triticale, sweet and red clovers, then the cocktail mix such as millet / cow peas / radish / canola / turnip. He inter-seeds poor stands with trefoil, sanfoin, millet and Cicer Milkvetch. Gabe is happy so far with a trial with Falcata alfalfa, a yellow flowered type.

Jay Shurer described how several of the ranchers use “cocktail” mixes to penetrate the hard pan and allow better root penetration and water infiltration. It also increases the organic content. Increasing soil water improves forage and grain production and lowers costs, even without, or with much less, artificial fertilizer. Jay showed two soil profiles: hard pan and with cover crops. The cover crop soil was much better. He claims that almost all soils that have been farmed for decades have a hard pan problem.

Ken Miller farms full time while being employed as a County Conservation District crop specialist. He farms in much the same manner as Gabe but has an irrigated pasture used to supplement rain fall. Ken grows corn with legumes, usually Cicer Milkvetch, and Triticale with Hairy Vetch, then grazes well through winter. He often uses the “Cocktail” cover crops as well. He showed where they are winning the fight with leafy spurge on native pasture using two types of Europian beetles.

The group drove to Gene Goven’s place north of Turtle Lake to observe his all-native pasture. Gene listed his management objectives: increase organic soil content, and moisture infiltration, increase biodiversity and extend the growing season. He showed how he rotates to distant paddocks to leave manure dwelling flies behind, leaves plenty of grass for the next rotation, keeps time on paddocks short, and lengthens the rest period (wants 60 – 80 days rest). Gene set up infiltration rings in pasture soil, added the equivalent of one inch of rainfall, and demonstrated how quickly and effectively the improved soils took in the water. He pointed out how the small sloughs on his pasture had little or no water in them while neighbouring pastures had some to plenty; his will fill in later while the neighbours’ go dry because of the superior infiltration capability of his soils.

The group toured Myron Lick’s place to observe a ranch converted from an entire grain operation to a certified beef operation. His main objective, beyond soil improvement, is to increase the Omega-3 content in his beef. He uses no chemicals, has almost no disease problems, and breeds for shorter, guttier animals through Angus lineage. He swath grazes and will bail graze this next winter. Myron calculates that if a cow provides 50 lb. of excrement per day; valued at $.20/day, he is gaining $21.53/ac. He uses grain/legume crops, cocktail cover crops, rotational and extended fall grazing in similar manner to the others in that group. He also grazes chickens in movable cages on his front lawn and can’t meet the buyers’ demands. The fertilizer input from the chickens is tremendous.
